HYDERABAD: Seeking to reassure Indian students and parents in the wake of the alleged racist attacks down under, the Australian High Commissioner to India John McCarthy today said the Australian government has taken several measures to provide security to the students.

McCarthy, who addressed a press conference jointly with D Sridhar Babu, Andhra Pradesh Minister for NRI affairs here, said Australian government is concerned over the attacks on Indians and that Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has taken the issue seriously.

"The Australian government is working closely with the state authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice and instill confidence among overseas students," he said.

Notwithstanding the attacks on overseas students, Australia is a safe and secure country but there are places with high rate of crime, the High Commissioner said.
