Over 2.13 lakh people, spreading over six districts in Bihar, are affected by floods which have so far claimed 12 lives as major rivers including the Ganga, Burhi Gandak, Punpun, Bagmati and Kosi are in spate.

PATNA: Over 2.13 lakh people, spreading over six districts in Bihar, are affected by floods which have so far claimed 12 lives as major rivers including the Ganga, Burhi Gandak, Punpun, Bagmati and Kosi are in spate.

Flood waters engulfed 15 villages in two blocks of Katihar district today taking the number of flood-hit districts to six.

"Over 2.13 lakh people are badly affected by floods in Muzaffarpur, Supaul, Saharsa, Patna and Nalanda districts as the toll due to house collapse, snake bites and boat accidents during the current spell rose to 12," sources in the state's disaster management department said. Property worth Rs 42.6 lakh have been damaged and that includes about 600 houses," the sources said, adding 269 boats has been pressed into service for relief and rescue operations.

A central water commission report said most of the major rivers in the state have crossed danger mark and threatening to overflow due to rains in their catchment areas. While the Ganga was flowing 17 cm above the red mark at Kahalgaon, Punpun was 127 cm above the danger level at Sripalpur.

Burhi Gandak was flowing above the danger mark at Samastipur, Lalbegiaghat, Rosera and Khagaria, while Bagmati was 66 cm above the red level at Benibad. The Kosi, Adhwara and Kamlabalan rivers were also flowing above the danger level at several places, they said.
