Over 1,000 CITU workers arrested
About 1,100 workers of different unorganised sectors, affiliated to CITU, were arrested, while attempting to stage picketing in various parts of the district.
They were demanding immediate withdrawal of a Government order transferring works of welfare boards from Labour to Revenue department.
About 550 workers, led by District Citu secretary, Arumugham and former CPIM MLA, Vellingiri, including 65 women, were arrested, when they sat on the road in the city and attempted to stage picketing, police said.
The workers, majority of them belonging to construction sector, holding placards, raised slogans in support of their demand.
Similar arrests were made in Annur, Avanashi, Tirupur, Pollachi, Sulur and Udumalpet in the district, police said.
