Orissa workers' wage raised on May Day

As a May Day gift, revised minimum wages for all categories of workers came into force in Orissa today.


BHUBANESWAR: As a May Day gift, revised minimum wages for all categories of workers came into force in Orissa today.

The minimum wage for unskilled workers had been raised from Rs 50 to Rs 70 per day while that of semi-skilled workers had been hiked from Rs 60 to Rs 80 per day, Labour and Employment Minister Jayanarayan Mishra said.

For skilled workers, the wage had been revised from Rs 70 to Rs 90 per day and for highly skilled the remuneration would be Rs 100 per day instead of the earlier Rs 80.

A notification in this regard had been published by the government, the minister said.

The revised wage structure would be applicable to 1,42,76,439 work force in the state of whom 95,89,269 are in the organised sector.

The last revision of minimum wage was undertaken in 2002, Mishra said adding the revision was necessary every five years.

But the minimum wage advisory committee can also recommend hike in the wages keeping in view the market prices and inflation, he said.
