Orissa violence: NCM seeks report
Taking serious note of the attacks on churches and Christians in Orissa, the National Commission for Minorities on Thursday sought a report from the state government on the violence in four towns of Kandhamal district.
NEW DELHI: Taking serious note of the attacks on churches and Christians in Orissa, the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) on Thursday sought a report from the state government on the violence in four towns of Kandhamal district.
An NCM delegation will be visiting the trouble-hit towns of the state shortly to make an on-the-spot assessment of the situation, a Commission spokesperson said here.
Taking suo-moto cognisance of media reports relating to the violence against Christians in Phulbani, Daringbadi, Bamunigaon and Baliguda towns of Kandhamal district, the Commission issued the notice to the Orissa government.
Condemning the attacks, the spokesperson said, the Commission felt that "such attacks constitute a serious violation of the rights of the minorities to practise their faith without any fear".
The Commission has asked state Chief Secretary Subas Pani to submit a report on the event that led to violence, action taken by the government to protect the members of the minority community from such attacks and relief provided to them wherever necessary, the spokesperson said.
A decision on the future course of action will be taken by the Commission based on the report submitted by the state government and recommendation of its delegation.
Churches and Christians in four towns Kandhamal district of Orissa have come under attack from suspected saffron activists for the consecutive third day on Thursday.
The attack is said to be triggered by an assault on VHP leader Laxamanananda Saraswati who led an anti-conversion movement.
