Orissa to monitor implementation of green norms by industries

The Orissa government has constituted a team to monitor implementation of environmental and forest laws by industries.

BHUBANESWAR: With the fate of Posco and Vedanta industrial projects hanging in the balance over green norms, the Orissa government has constituted a team to monitor implementation of environmental and forest laws by industries.

"The state-level squad will primarily ensure that the industries implement forest acts and pollution control laws besides keeping a watch on siphoning of the state's revenue by industries," said a senior State government official after a meeting to review action taken on decisions made by the High Level Clearance Authority (HLCA) chaired by chief minister Naveen Patnaik.

The team, to be headed by managing director of Industrial Development Corporation of Orissa Limited (IDCOL), will include members from the State Pollution Control Board, the Water Resources Department and the Forest and Environment Secretary.

The move to ensure implementation of forest and environment laws comes after the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) pointed out disregard of certain eco laws by the mega industrial projects of Posco and Vedanta.

The ministry asked the State government to stop project-related activities at Posco's plant site in Jagatsinghpur district and rejected Vedanta's mining plan at Niyamgiri hills in Kalahandi district on charges of violating the Forest Rights Act, Environment Protection Act and Forest Conservation Act.
