Orissa launches mass immunisation drive to check birdflu
With the dreaded birdflu virus spreading in neighbouring West Bengal, the Orissa government today launched a mass immunisation drive to prevent its spread.
Measures to prevent import of poultry and its products were further tightened in Balasore, Kenojhar and Mayurbhanj districts following attempts to smuggle chicken and eggs into Orissa, officials said.
Besides rushing medical teams to different bordering villages and imposing prohibitory orders in 72 such villages, the government also asked officials to provide preventive medicines and injections to chicken.
"At least 29 medical teams are pressed into service in Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts," an official said, adding senior officials were camping in the two districts to ensure that preventive measures were taken properly.
Officials at Laxmannath check gate seized 105 cartons of eggs while being brought from West Bengal in a truck, said Balasore chief district veterinary officer L K Tudu.
The eggs were buried today, he said. It was suspected that while all the road links to West Bengal were sealed, chicken and poultry products were smuggled into Orissa through water ways or forest route.
