Orissa govt admits loot of minerals, to take action

The Orissa government on Wednesday admitted large-scale theft of mineral resources and said action had been taken against the officials, traders, contractors and others involved in the loot.

BHUBANESWAR: The Orissa government on Wednesday admitted large-scale theft of mineral resources and said action had been taken against the officials, traders, contractors and others involved in the loot.

Replying to a query by independent member Jitu Patnaik, steel and mines minister, Raghunath Mohanty, said at least 840 cases were detected in 2009-10 and Rs 7.77 crore was realized from the culprits as penalty.

The minister informed that 405 vehicles found involved in illegal transportation of minerals were seized by the police.

“The state government is serious in checking theft of mineral resources and will take stringent actions against the persons involved in such nefarious activities. Even if the culprit is found to be an influential political ruler or a bureaucrat, he/she will not be spared,” Mr Mohanty declared.

The minister informed that the state government has formed a task force under the chairmanship of chief secretary to prevent illegal mining and transportation of mineral resources.

“The basic responsibility of the task force is to put a brake on the illegal mining and export of minerals and recommend actions against the errant officials and illegal mineral traders,” he informed.

Mr Mohanty said at least 682 mining lease licenses were cancelled by the state government in the last four years for violating the stipulated norms under the relevant Acts.

“The state government is leaving no stone unturned to stop theft of mineral resources. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has requested Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to stop illegal transport of minerals on sea routes. In response to the CM’s request, the union shipping ministry, railway ministry and directorate of foreign trade officials have agreed to hold a meeting to find ways to check illegal trafficking of minerals,” he added.

The entire House expressed concern over large-scale “loot” of minerals mafia elements with tacit support from influential politicians and bureaucrats. The members said unless the government took actions against the culprits, the state government’s image would continue to be tarnished both in the state and outside.
