Mumbai: Maharashtra, which has seen many farmer suicides over the years, witnessed another one on Sunday. However, unlike earlier ones, the death of Raju Talware, 38, who hung himself from a tree outside his home in Buldhana, could hurt the BJP as he wore the campaign T-shirt of the party that had the slogan ‘Punha Anuya Aaple Sarkar’ (Let’s re-elect our government) and a huge ‘lotus’ symbol.

Talware’s photo has gone viral on social media. Buldhana falls in Vidarbha and he committed suicide, after he was burdened by huge debts, on the day Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis addressed a huge rally in Vidarbha. The opposition has seized the incident to target the BJP.

Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar slammed the BJP over Talware’s death and alleged that it has exposed the BJP’s ‘fake claims’. “A farmer in Vidarbha has welcomed the chief minister by killing himself. Today, you are suffering the consequences of electing a BJP government. Don’t you want to change the situation you are living in,” he asked while addressing a rally in Aurangabad.

Pawar alleged that the farmers have been suffering under the BJP government. “The farmers are not getting the price for their produce. The BJP used to claim when in Opposition that it would give more support prices to the farmers. However, in power they are not offering what they claimed.”
