New Delhi: The opposition parties have criticised the central government’s decision to hike railway fares and price of LPG cylinders. They dubbed the move as Centre’s ‘unfair new year gift’ to the ordinary citizens.

The Left also questioned the rationale of a BJP MP submitting a notice for breach of privilege against the Kerala chief minister after the state assembly passed a resolution asking for the withdrawal of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

AICC spokesperson Sushmita Dev said on Wednesday that the decision will put the common man into a deeper financial crisis and lamented that this hike has come right in the middle of the financial burdens on people due to the economic slowdown.

“This hike in railway fares and price of LPG cylinder is nothing but injustice towards the poor people”. It is an fair new year’s gift to the common man from the government,” she said.

CPM leader Sitaram Yechury said in a tweet “The Modi govt starts the year. After railway passenger fare hikes, another attack on peoples’ livelihoods. All this In the wake of sharp job losses, food price inflation and record fall in rural wages”.
