Opposition protest price rise in Assam Assembly
Opposition legislators in Assam on Wednesday demanded explanation from Congreess-led state government for steep rise in the price of essential commodities, as the House was thrown into turmoil.
Food and Civil Supplies Minister Nazrul Islam said, "It was due to the cascading effect of rise in the prices of essential commodities across the country that as most of the items are procured from outside the state."
Opposition members led by Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) raised the issue during zero hour. They shouted slogans and waved placards against price rise, prompting the Speaker to adjourn proceedings for ten minutes.
Dissatisfied with Islam's reply, Opposition legislators of AGP, BJP, CPI and Assam United Democratic Front (AUDF), rushed to the well of the House.
With the ruling Congress members also shouting, nothing could be heard.
Speaker Tanka Bahadur Rai adjourned the House after the Opposition members walked out shouting. They then organised a procession in the streets near the Assembly.
