KOCHI: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan should quit the home portfolio if he does not have the time to restrain the police men from misusing the provisions of UAPA, says the opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala.

He was speaking in the context of the rising criticism against the state police that they are misusing the UAPA. “The police are acting as if they can do anything under the Left Government,” Ramesh Chennithala said.

His comment was in the context of the move by the police to arrest novelist Kamal C for allegedly insulting the national anthem and Nadeer for his alleged links with the Maoists. The police has also arrested a few students of a college in Ernakulam for sticking posters on the walls of the college building.

The Chief Minister seems to have completely lost the control over the police, he said. If he does not have the time manage the affairs of the home department. He said that what the students wrote on the wall was a poem by a Malayalam poet.

Meanwhile, BJP’s M S Kumar also said that Pinarayi Vijayan should quit the home portfolio. Since the CPI(M) has conceded that they control the police force the Chief Minister should give up the portfolio, he said.

He added that there will be problems in the state if the CPI(M) continue to interfere in the work of the police force.
