Only one Indian has died of Ebola infection: Government

NEW DELHI: Only one Indian employed in Liberia has died of Ebola virus infection earlier this year, the government said today.

"As per reports available with the government, there has been only one Indian casualty so far. Mohammed Amir who was employed in a pharmacy in Liberia died of Ebola virus infection on September 7, 2014," Minister of State of External Affairs V K Singh told Lok Sabha in a written reply.

He said that his family members were informed about the incident. As per the World Health Organisation (WHO) norms, the body of the deceased was buried locally.

Singh said that India missions are facilitating access of India nationals to proper treatment facilities as and when required.

He said that Indian missions covering Ebola-affected countries have been directed to remain in regular contact with the Indian community as well as with government and UN agencies concerned to ensure their safety and well-being.

"In addition, Indian Missions have been issuing regular advisories and facilitating travel of those who had wanted to return to India," he said.

As per reports till November 20, WHO has said that 5,420 people had so far died of Ebola across eight countries, out of a total 15,145 cases of infection, since late December 2013.
