New Delhi: Union ministers Amit Shah and Smriti Irani hit out at West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and her Trinamool Congress party while speaking at a rally at Howrah on Sunday.

Shah said the TMC needs to introspect why most of its senior leaders were leaving the party, adding “there will be no one left except Mamata Banerjee in the party at the end of assembly elections”. Irani said a party that supports infighting and insults ‘Jai Shree Ram’ cannot retain any of its members.

Shah, whose campaign tour to Bengal was cancelled owing to the situation in Delhi following a blast near the Israel embassy and amid the farmers' agitation, addressed the rally virtually and said he would be in the state soon.

He promised that the Ayushman Bharat national health scheme will be implemented in Bengal as soon as the party comes to power in the state. He alleged that under the TMC, the state was worse than what it was under the Left government. He claimed that the TMC had forgotten its foundational principle of "Ma Maati, Manush" and was indulging in Bhatija kalyan, rather than Jan kalyan.

Irani, speaking in Bengali for most of the speech, said "Ramrajya was at the gate in Bengal," and that the TMC was on its way out, as "no patriot will remain in a party that insults Lord Ram". A few TMC leaders, including former minister Rajib Banerjee and MLAs Prabir Ghosal and Baishali Dalmiya, joined the BJP on Sunday .
