PM said, `precautionary measures’ were being taken to prevent terrorists from manipulating the stock market.

NEW DELHI: Prime minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday said that all `precautionary measures’ were being taken to prevent terrorists from manipulating the stock market. The prime minister was responding to a question on National Security Advisor M K Narayanan’s statement at a security conference in Munich on isolated incidents of terrorists manipulating the stock market. `` All I can say is that we are taking all precautionary measures,’’ he affirmed.

`I do not want to add to the turbulence by saying something. So the question should be reserved for some other occasion ,” Mr Singh remarked at a joint press briefing with Italian president Romano Prodi.

Earlier in the day, the BJP criticised Mr Narayanan for publicly admitting to manipulation of the country’s bourses by terror outfits. The main opposition alleged that the centre and regulatory authorities had failed to turn the tap off on terror funding and attributed this to the UPA regime ‘soft-pedalling on terror’.

The assertion by the NSA that “official agencies” in Pakistan were pumping millions of dollars for militancy in India, and using underground and parallel banking systems to move funds, reflects a “complete failure of the overall intelligence network including the larger economic intelligence,” a BJP statement said. “We are surprised why the government takes no action on the NSA’s advice. We believe he has reduced his role to that of a meteorologist.”
