NEW DELHI: The AAP government on Monday informed the Delhi high court that only 1,100 e-rickshaws have been granted permission to operate in Delhi and the others are being impounded, while the owners face prosecution.

The Delhi government made the submission before Justice Manmohan during the hearing of a contempt plea accusing it of failing to act against e-rickshaws plying illegally in the city.

Opposing the contempt Opposing the contempt plea, the government maintained that only those e-rickshaws complying with its guidelines have been granted permission to ply , while the rest have been impounded.

The government added that licences have been granted to 1,100 e-rickshaws, 15,000 have been impounded and prosecution initiated against owners of 16,000 erickshaws.

But petitioner Shahnawaz Khan, whose plea had led to the rickshaws being banned from city in 2014, alleged that licences have been granted to only 31 e-rickshaws, while others continue to ply illegally.

The court after hearing arguments of both sides asked them to file their submissions by way of affidavits and listed the matter for hearing on February 15, 2016.
