One SRC good enough: Cong leaders

Senior Congress leaders from Telangana stepped up the campaign for creation of a separate state, a day after the Congress core committee discussed the issue.

NEW DELHI: Senior Congress leaders from Telangana stepped up the campaign for creation of a separate state, a day after the Congress core committee discussed the issue.

The leaders met senior AICC officials and Congress ministers here to press for the demand and sought an appointment with party president Sonia Gandhi.

Taking a cue from chief minister Y S Rajashekhara Reddy’s statement on Tuesday that the leadership had noted the stand that setting up of a second state reorganisation commission (SRC) would only delay the creation of a separate state, pro-Telangana Congress leaders said here that the Centre should now act on the first SRC recommendation, which favoured a Telangana state. They said it was high time the Congress leadership acted on the promise of the 2004 elections.

The delegation on Wednesday met core committee members A K Antony and Ahmed Patel and other AICC leaders, including Veerappa Moily and Janardhan Dwivedi. They are slated to meet Union ministers Pranab Mukherjee and Arjun Singh. The delegation comprises former PCC chief Narsa Reddy, former minister Purushotham Reddy, MLCs Govardhan Reddy, Yadav Reddy and K R Amoza.

Though the leaders held discussions with senior Congress leader G Venkatswamy here, the latter chose not to be part of the delegation as he, in his capacity as CWC member, had already taken up the Telangana cause with Ms Gandhi.

“In the 2004 election manifesto of the Congress party in Andhra Pradesh, we stated that the there are valid reasons for creating a separate Telangana state. The 2004 Congress election manifesto was cleared after a consensus among Congress leaders of Andhra, Telangana and Raysleema. Already, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Mr Mukherjee have stated that there was no need for a second SRC. We agree with them. Since the first SRC itself recommended the creation of the Telangana state, the Union government could now straightaway bring a motion to that effect in Parliament”, said Mr Amoz, convenor of the senior Telangana Congress leaders forum.

Caught between anti and pro-Telangana groups, AICC on Wednesday continued with its characteristic balancing act. While dismissing as “not correct” a loaded suggestion that the chief minister managed to get the high command to reject the demand, Veerappa Moily, the one who looks after the party in AP, said the party core committee on Tuesday night discussed various inputs and discussions would continue.

Stating that the statehood needed a larger consensus of various parties and that attempts were on to achieve it, Mr Moily accused TDP and BJP of indulging in double speak, even though he avoided clarifying the Congress stand on the issue. As the high command is trying to buy time, Mr Moily ducked queries on whether the state government will pass a resolution in the assembly, seeking the creation of a new state.
