A scene from the 'One Nation, One Election' bill debate
Two bills outlining the process for holding simultaneous elections in India were introduced in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday following a heated debate.

Opposition parties criticised the proposed legislation – a constitutional amendment bill and a regular bill – as “an attack on the federal structure.”

The government refuted this claim.

The introduction of the bills proceeded after a division of votes requested by the opposition.

The bills passed with 269 votes in favor and 198 against, confirmed by electronic voting and a paper slip count.

This marked the first use of electronic voting in the new Parliament House.
