NEW DELHI: With the spillover of Gurjars��� stir causing traffic disruptions on some key stretches in the National Capital Region (NCR), the police in adjoining states of Delhi, Haryana and UP are bracing for what may well turn out to be an eventful ���rasta roko��� protest by the community in the NCR on Thursday.
The Centre has issued fresh advisories to the three states to take all precautionary measures to prevent any untoward incident or disruption of public property. The authorities in Delhi, UP and Haryana have been asked to intensify patrolling in vulnerable areas, particularly the Gurjar-dominated pockets.
Towards this end, the Delhi Police will be deploying around 10,000 men, particularly on arterial roads and highways, on Thursday so as to prevent traffic disruptions and the consequent inconvenience to the public. For Haryana, which has several Gurjar pockets in NCR areas like Gurgaon, Faridabad, Rewari and Sonepat, the Centre has rushed 3-4 companies of Central para-military forces to assist the police in keeping law and order.
However, no extra force was sought by the UP, which also faces impact of the Gurjar stir in border areas like Noida and Ghaziabad. According to sources in the MHA, Union home secretary Madhukar Gupta earlier on Wednesday spoke to the DGPs of Haryana and UP, besides the Delhi Police commissioner, asking them to monitor the situation on Thursday and avoid any ugly confrontation with the protestors. There must be close coordination between the police and district authorities, the Centre cautioned the three states.
Delhi has major Gurjar-dominated pockets in areas like Mehrauli, Ghazipur, Patparganj, Chilla, Khanpur, Ayanagar and Rampur. Large contingents of the police are to be deployed in all these areas. The MHA has also appealed to the local Gurjar MLAs to talk to the community leaders and convince them to exercise restraint.
Meanwhile, the Gurjar agitation raised its head in the NCR on Wednesday with protestors blocking traffic on certain key stretches, even as the agitators forced shutdowns in several areas of Rajasthan. A group of protesters set tyres afire in Gurgaon���s MG Road area, where a string of malls are located, causing a major traffic jam. They dispersed after police intervened.
In Rajasthan, the agitators forced shutdowns in Tonk, Sawaimadhopur, Rajsamand, Rawatbhata, Pali and Deoli areas. Traffic was also affected on the Jaipur-Agra, Jaipur-Kota and Udaipur-Ahmedabad national highways.The Rajasthan government has clamped the stringent National Security Act (NSA) in 15 districts, enabling the police to arrest a person without a warrant.
