Omar to serve full six-year term as J-K CM: PM

NEW DELHI: Omar Abdullah will serve his full term of six years as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said here today.

"We had an arrangement with Omar Abdullah. The Congress President ( Sonia Gandhi) made clear to him that he will serve his full term of six years. I am not aware of any decision to reverse that decision," he said at an interaction with a group of editors.

He was responding to a question about some voices in the Jammu and Kashmir Congress for rotational Chief Ministership.

The statement of the Prime Minister was expected to put a lid on the moves in the state Congress which had been trying to gain support for a rotational Chief Minister as Omar would be completing his three years in office in January next. Congress is a coalition partner in the ruling alliance.

Stressing on his policy of "zero tolerance" for human rights violations, Singh said "if something wrong is done by Amry, Police or Para-military forces, there must be action.

"The Chief Minister and his officials must be alert to deal with the situation."

He said though the situation in Kashmir is better there should be no lowering of guard and a continued vigil needed to be maintained. "The situation in Kashmir is better but we have to remain alert," he said.
