Omar Abdullah suggests separatists to talk to Central Government

On the eve of Republic day, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah asked separatists to open talks with the central government and discuss political issues threadbare seeking amicable solution.

SRINAGAR: On the eve of Republic day, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah asked separatists to open talks with the central government and discuss political issues threadbare seeking amicable solution.

“When they can talk to the leadership of neighbouring country (read Pakistan) they should also talk to the leaders of their own country and work for settlement of the basic political issues confronting J&K for the larger interests of the people of the state”, Omar said. “Political issues cannot be resolved by the gun or by money but across the table through a process of dialogue.”

Omar was appreciative of the people in the state for helping the coalition government to maintain peace and carry forward development activities to all regions and sub-regions. Insisting that J&K cannot be governed from Srinagar or Jammu for its geographical diversity, remoteness and area specific problems, Omar said the Panchayat Raj system is being encouraged as already 14 departments have been transferred to them. He said their security, insurance cover and their demand for honorarium have been well taken and the government has prepared action plan in this regard. My government, Omar said is re-doubling the efforts to seek all round and inclusive development across the state to achieve the target of financial autonomy and economic self-reliance.

In sharp contrast, governor N N Vohra’s Republic Day eve speech talked in detail about the return of peace and the change that it brought around. Vohra thanked security forces for the role they played along with the people in moving ahead on the path of peace and development. Vohra said even though there is marked decline in the incidents of violence, the security forces can not lower their guard under any circumstances “till such time as sustained calm prevails on the north western frontiers”.

“If our people remain committed to thwarting the activities of anti-national elements, the state shall achieve lasting peace and move rapidly on the path of progress and prosperity,” Vohra said. “I would reiterate that growth and development can materialize and sustain only in an environment of peace and normalcy.” Vohra advised people to close their ranks for the resolution of all remaining issues through dialogue and discussions and not through agitations and confrontations which have already cost J&K enormous human and economic losses.
