Olympics torch relay halted for three days for quake mourning

The Beijing Olympic torch relay will be halted for three days as part of a national mourning period following a devastating earthquake, Games organisers said on Sunday.

BEIJING: The Beijing Olympic torch relay will be halted for three days as part of a national mourning period following a devastating earthquake, Games organisers said on Sunday.

The Beijing Organising Committee of the Games has decided to "pause" the relay on the mainland from May 19 to 21 in the memory of those who lost their lives in the "terrible earthquake", the organisers said in a statement on their website.

Flags will fly half mast and public "amusements" would be suspended for three days as the official mourning period for the victims begins from tomorrow, official Xinhua news agency said.

The State Council or the cabinet ordered "a nationwide display of respect for the dead," it said.

Public have been asked to stand in silence for three minutes from 2:28 pm, the time when earthquake struck, on Monday, while automobiles, trains, and ships would sound their air sirens.

The order was issued in a brief circular that contained no further details, the agency said.
