Olympic torch relay starts in Tibet
China on Saturday started the Olympic torch relay leg through Tibet's capital Lhasa, amid heavy security, and just three months after riots there against Chinese rule.
Hand-picked and accredited spectators cheered the torch as it began its route through Lhasa shortly after 9 am (0100 GMT) in front of Norbulingka, the former summer residence of the Dalai Lama.
Paramilitary police kept a close watch from the ground and from surrounding buildings, while the area was cordoned off to everyone other than those given special permission to attend the relay.
