LHASA: China on Saturday started the Olympic torch relay leg through Tibet's capital Lhasa, amid heavy security, and just three months after riots there against Chinese rule.

Hand-picked and accredited spectators cheered the torch as it began its route through Lhasa shortly after 9 am (0100 GMT) in front of Norbulingka, the former summer residence of the Dalai Lama.

Paramilitary police kept a close watch from the ground and from surrounding buildings, while the area was cordoned off to everyone other than those given special permission to attend the relay.
