MUMBAI: Worried about the rising fuel prices, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil on Wednesday asked the State Government officials to bring down the use of official vehicles.

Patil said the officers should plan official tours or daily commute in such a way that five per cent fuel can be saved. They can even share the vehicle, he added.

A meeting held in Mantralaya, chaired by Patil discussed various options of fuel conservation in the state. Chief Secreatry Johny Joseph, Additional Chief Secretary for Home Chitkala Zutshi, Principal Secretary for Transport Ramnath Jha also attended the meeting.

Video conferencing was one of the suggestions given at the meeting. Mantralaya and major Government institutions have the facility of video conferencing, which can save fuel and travelling time, said an official.

Car pool option was also discussed. In some foreign countries, car pooling reduces wastage of fuel, Patil said.

The State Government's GR explaining the rules of vehicle use, issued in 2001 also said the Collector level officers should use maximum 3,000 litre fuel or 3,000 Kg CNG per year. The CEOs of Zila Parilshad should restrict the use to 2,000 litre and BDOs to 1,000 litre per year, the GR said.
