Odisha Law Commission soon: Naveen Patnaik

CUTTACK: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today said the government is determined to constitute Law Commission and take other welfare measures for advocates, including setting up a lawyers' academy for the benefit of young lawyers.

Patnaik, who was the Chief Guest at the 44th annual conference of All Odisha Lawyers' Association here, said, "The state government is shortly going to constitute Law Commission in the state. It will examine all the existing laws and suggest modifications, if necessary."

Urging lawyers to take up social responsibility and work for the benefit of the poor and disadvantaged, he said in a democratic society lawyers have a more important role to play as they are the guardians of the rule of law.

"Every civilised society sustains itself on rule of law," the Chief Minister said.

State Law Minister Arun Sahoo said the Cabinet's approval for the Law Commission of Odisha is awaiting Finance Department's concurrence.

Inaugurating the two-day conference, Supreme Court Judge Justice Dipak Misra said lawyers are "priests of the temple of law" and they are always looked upon for proper administration of rule of law.
