NAGANO: Anti-Beijing demonstrators on Saturday threw projectiles at the Olympic torch relay in Japan, briefly holding up the latest leg of its troubled worldwide journey, an AFP reporter said.

Demonstrators who appeared to be Japanese nationalists tossed what looked like plastic containers towards the runner holding the torch. Dozens of protesters were waving large Tibetan flags and signs reading, "Shame on China."

Police immediately seized one of the demonstrators and sealed off the area. Chinese demonstrators who were nearby shouted, "Arrest them! Arrest them!"

Thousands of police are protecting the torch, symbol of the Beijing Olympics, after chaotic scenes during other stops of the relay.
