'Objectionable' part removed from sex edu books

Uttar Pradesh government gives in to pressure, removes 'objectionable portions' from the books on sex education.

LUCKNOW: Apparently bowing to the pressure from the Opposition parties, Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday directed withdrawal of "objectionable portions" from the books on sex education prescribed for high school and intermediate courses.
The government has also ordered an inquiry to ascertain as to how these alleged objectionable portions were included in the books and fix responsibility.
The issue rocked the state Vidhan Sabha when members from Congress, BJP and Samajwadi Party alleged that the content of the book had been prepared by the UP AIDs control society and the natational AIDs control organisation at the initiative of the UNICEF.
They alleged that the words and language used in the book could prove harmful to the adoloscent boys and girls, especially in co-educational institutions.
They alleged that it was a "planned attack" on the Indian culture. A time may come when blue films will be screened in the name of AIDs awareness programmes in the schools, BJP legisltature party leader Om Prakash Singh said.
The members said that in the first phase, the teachers of the schools would be taught sex education.
In his reply, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Lalji Verma said the objectionable portions from the book would be withdrawn.
He said that the Director, Secondary Education, had been directed to conduct an inquiry and ascertain as to how they creeped into the books and punish those found responsible.
