Obama 'humbled' by Nobel Peace Prize honour

"The President was humbled to be selected by the committee," a senior administration official was quoted as saying by the media here.

WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama was "humbled" at being picked up as the Nobel Peace Prize winner this year, a US official said on Friday, after Obama humbled by Nobel Peace Prize his press secretary woke him up to break the surprise news.

"The President was humbled to be selected by the committee," a senior administration official was quoted as saying by the media here.

Robert Gibbs, the Press Secretary, called the White House shortly before 6 a.m. (1530 IST) and woke the 48-year-old President with the news.

The US media reported that the White House was caught by surprise as it had no idea that the prize was coming.

"There has been no discussion, nothing at all," Rahm Emanuel, the President's chief of staff, told the New York Times.

The White House says President Barack Obama was woken up a little before 6 a.m. (1000 GMT) with the news that he had won the Nobel Peace Prize.

Press secretary Robert Gibbs learned from reporters that Obama had won the 2009 prize, and telephoned the White House early on Friday to pass along the news to his boss.

The president plans to talk about his award at 10:30 a.m. (1430 GMT) on Friday in the Rose Garden.

The White House had no immediate comment on the announcement, which took the young administration by surprise. Obama's presidency began less than two weeks before the Nobel nomination deadline.

Manmohan congratulates Obama

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday congratulated US President Barack Obama on winning the Nobel Peace Prize 2009.

"I have not heard the news, but if it is true, I would like to give my whole-hearted congratulations to President Obama," Manmohan Singh told reporters here.

He is scheduled to visit the US next month, marking the first state visit by a foreign leader in the Obama administration.
