NURM funds elude city

The central government funds under the National Urban Renewal Mission (NURM) continues to elude Mumbai.

MUMBAI: The central government funds under the National Urban Renewal Mission (NURM) continues to elude Mumbai. An agreement between the state government and the Centre over Mumbai sewage disposal project (MSDP) was supposed to be signed on Thursday at Delhi.

But the Union urban development ministry and poverty alleviation ministry have sought some more clarifications from the state government on some issues before signing an agreement, a senior official who attended the meeting told ET.

“The meeting focused on negotiations rather than the agreement formalities since both the ministries want certain clarifications. Hopefully, things would be sorted out within a week and we will get back to the centre with the required clarifications,” the official said.

Officials of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which has proposed the project said successful negotiations on the MSDP would lead to a broad consensus on the remaining six infrastructure projects proposed by the state government for Mumbai under NURM.

“Other projects won’t take much time in getting the Centre’s approval once MSDP is cleared. Clarifications that have been sought pertain to other projects as well,” a BMC official said.
