Nuke liability bill in Lok Sabha today

After introduction, N-liability bill is likely to be referred to standing committee.

The government will introduce the nuclear limited liability bill in its original form in Parliament on Friday. It is likely to be referred to the standing committee thereafter. Government had attempted to introduce the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Bill in the Lok Sabha in march but had to shelve it under pressure from the Opposition, which had made it clear that it would ask for a division of vote at the time of introduction.

It was expected that the government would introduce the bill and refer it to a parliamentary standing committee after winning the trial of strength in Lok Sabha during opposition-sponsored cut motions. The Left is likely to ask for a division when the government introduces the proposed legislation. In the present form, the bill limits liability to the operator for each nuclear incident at Rs 500 crore.
