NEW DELHI: AICC General Secretary Rahul Gandhi began to address the House by making a point repeatedly "I will speak here as an Indian first and not as a Congressman."

In order to be heard patiently by members present in the House, he urged them to "please listen to him patiently" adding "it's not that all of you agree to what I say but please listen to me before you try and shut me down". (Watch)

Rahul Gandhi said energy security is very important if the country wants to eradicate poverty and the much publicised nuke deal is aimed at addressing to this problem. He referred to a few poor households to make his point.

To silence agitating opposition members, he even said, "I'm sure all members present in this room want poverty to be eradicated from the country. Energy security is a must to achieve that goal." (Watch)

Even as Rahul Gandhi was speaking, BSP members stood to protest some of his remarks. On repeated requests by Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, members refused to comply with his directives and refused to listen to him. On this repeated pandemonium in the House, the Speaker remarked, "the Parliament of India is reaching its nadir."

Later, the Speaker adjourned the House till 2 pm after BSP members led by Brajesh Pathak created commotion in the House.

Unable to control the repeated commotion by the members of various political parties during the confidence motion debate, Speaker Somnath Chatterjee even threatened twice to order trust vote immediately.
