MUMBAI: As Maharashtra and several other parts of the country reel under severe drought conditions, former Atomic Energy Commission chairman Anil Kakodkar today said that there is a need for proper management of water as well as waste and control on extraction of ground water.

"Management of water as well as waste is very crucial. Also there is a need to maximise the recharge and control extraction of ground water," Kakodkar said at the inauguration of a national workshop and exhibition on 'DAE Clean Technologies' here.

As a part of Swacch Bharat Mission, the Department of Atomic Energy has been observing 'Swachhta Pakhwada (cleanliness fortnight) from April 18 to May 2.

"We must take up a challenge of treating and recycling waste water. There are various technologies available in waste management, even on industrial levels. But we should have the right mindset for accepting new technologies," he added.

Clean technologies developed by Department of Atomic Energy like hygienesation of sewage sludge, NISAGRUNA biogas plant and Plazma technologies are at the centre of Clean India Mission, Kakodkar added.
