Nuclear Power Corp to engage NGOs for development work around N-plants

NPCIL will engage non-governmental organisations for development work around new and existing power plants, and a top company official said it was not a confidence building measure.

NEW DELHI: State-owned Nuclear Power Corporation of India ( NPCIL) will engage non-governmental organisations for development work around new and existing power plants, and a top company official said it was not a confidence building measure.

The move comes just a month after radiation leaked from a crippled nuclear power plant in Japan sparking a debate in India on the safety aspect of the nuclear energy programme. NPCIL, the only entity permitted to generate nuclear power in the country, has been undertaking social activities with the help of local help groups.

“This is the first time we have planned to engage non-governmental organisations. The move aims at streamlining our social responsibility activities,” said SK Tapkir, NPCIL’s executive director for rehabilitation and resettlement, to ET over phone from Mumbai.

The company plans to invest up to Rs 15 crore on development activities, education, health, infrastructure and environment, in the areas in the current fiscal, against about Rs 12 crore in 2010-11, he said. On Monday, NPCIL invited proposals from NGOs and autonomous bodies and Mr Tapkir said bids would be evaluated on basis of profile, experience and annual turnover.

Tapkir, however, said the move was not a confidence building measure to support India’s nuclear energy programme that aims to generate 20,000 MW by 2020. Concerns have been raised over the safety of nuclear energy projects around the world after the quake and tsunami of March 11 crippled the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan. Unable to control the crisis, Japan has put all new nuclear projects on hold.

NPCIL operates 20 reactors with a total capacity of 4,780 MW in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Gujarat. Another six reactors, with 4,800 MW aggregate capacity, are under construction in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu.
