Nuclear deal a surrender to US diktat: Advani

The BJP on Wednesday accused the UPA government of “surrendering” before the US on nuclear deal issue and warned that giving up the atomic potential would be “fatal” for the country.

KULLU: The BJP on Wednesday accused the UPA government of “surrendering” before the US on nuclear deal issue and warned that giving up the atomic potential would be “fatal” for the country.

“Late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi ordered first Pokhran test while Atal Bihari Vajpayee is credited with ordering the second explosion. But this government is willing to give in writing that it will never do a third Pokhran,” Advani said addressing a BJP election rally here in Himachal Pradesh.

“Surrendering our nuclear potential will be fatal for India when we face frequent problems from neighbouring China and Pakistan,” he said.

Making a scathing attack on PM Manmohan Singh, Advani said he has been given the top post but “minus power”.
Charging Congress with being guided by “vote bank” politics, the BJP leader said it was due to this the UPA government has not executed the death sentence on Afzal Guru.

Despite the court awarding him capital punishment in the parliament attack case.

Advani charged the UPA government with “letting down” the “aam admi” (common man) because of its “financial mismanagement”. “This government has come to power on the promise of welfare to aam admi. But see what is the condition of the common man who are battling to meet their both ends due to rise in prices of essential commodities,” he said.

On the other hand, the NDA government under AB Vajpayee did not raise the price of essential goods despite hike in price of oil in the international market, he said adding had “we got some more time, much more could have been achieved”.

Advani alleged the country could not achieve the desired growth in the past 60 years of independence under Congress rule. “Congress failed to provide an honest government to the country as a result of which the nation could not register growth as per its potential,” he said. He also flayed the rule of one (Nehru) family over the country.

“This seems to have been a great impediment in the desired growth of democracy in India,” he said adding had “iron man” Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel become prime minister in 1947 the condition of the country would have been quite different.
