NEW YORK: A US-based NRI group has welcomed the appointment of former first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton as the Secretary of State, expressing hope that she will bring new initiatives for a peaceful South Asia.

The Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) termed Hillary Clinton as a friend of India.

"It is a welcome news since the Clintons have been great friends of India and the Indian American community. In fact, Indian Americans supported and raised funds for Senator Hillary Clinton during the Democratic Primary," GOPIO International Chairman Thomas Abraham said.

"She is person who does not have to be briefed about India," he added.
