NRC list: No one will be harassed, Rajnath Singh tells Mamata Banerjee

The NRC final draft list has left out names of several genuine Indian citizens for different reasons, including those whose claims could not be verified due to errors in the documents.

NEW DELHI: Home minister Rajnath Singh has assured West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee that no one will be harassed during the exercise to upgrade the citizenship registry in Assam. Banerjee had met Singh on Tuesday evening to raise the issue of over 40 lakh people who were excluded in the NRC final draft list in Assam.

“I told home minister Rajnath Singh what has happened in the name of NRC was not good. It is not good to make refugees who came to India again refugees. 40 lakh people will lose identity…where will they get ration, food, education and jobs? I asked him to bring an amendment bill in Parliament and find a solution so that they don’t suffer,” Banerjee said after her meeting with the minister.

Later, Singh tweeted what he told Banerjee: “The NRC updation exercise was being carried out in a totally fair, transparent, non-discriminatory and legal manner. Nobody will be harassed in this entire process... adequate opportunity of being heard will be given to all persons....”
