NRC issue: Rajya Sabha adjourned; Opposition walks out of Lok Sabha

NEW DELHI: While the opposition parties staged a walkout in the Lok Sabha over the NRC issue, the Upper House was adjourned without conducting any substantial business. The disruptions in both the Houses were led by Trinamool Congress.

Trinamool’s Derek O’Brien had given a notice in the Rajya Sabha for suspension of work and discussion on the “inhuman” decision to keep over 40 Lakh people out of draft NRC in Assam. He raised the issue soon after Chairman Venkaiah Naidu announced the start of zero hour.

But Naidu said he didn’t receive any notice from members though some of them had informed him just before the proceedings began that they wanted to discuss the issue. He informed the House that he has requested home minister Rajnath Singh to be present so that he can make a statement.


This did not pacify the members and Trinamool leaders walked into the Well of the House, forcing Naidu to adjourn the House. Congress and SP supported Trinamool on the issue. The House was adjourned again at 12 noon and 2 pm.

When the House met again, protests continued and Naidu adjourned the proceedings till Tuesday.

Raising the issue in the Lok Sabha, Trinamool’s Sudip Bandhopadhyay said: “An amendment should be moved in the House.” Congress’ Mallikarjun Kharge, CPM’s Mohd Salim and RJD MP JP Yadav backed Bandyopadhyay’s statement.
