NRC full of wrongful inclusions: Centre & Assam govt
NEW DELHI: The central and the Assam governments on Friday raised serious objections to the anomalies and discrepancies in the ongoing National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise in the state which allegedly left out genuine Indian citizens from the draft NRC and wrongfully included many illegal immigrants, urging the court to direct 20%reverification of all inclusions in the districts bordering Bangladesh.

A two-judge bench comprising Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and Justice RF Nariman listed the case for further hearing on Tuesday. The bench said that the verification exercise of those left out involved verification of the entire family tree of the person excluded. That per se resulted in the verification of over 27% of the inclusions in the draft NRC, the CJI said. At least eight million people got reverified in the process, he said.

The Union and Assam governments through solicitor general Tushar Mehta, assisted by counsel Suvodeep Roy, said the reports from the ground were showing more wrongful inclusions than exclusions.
