The Chief Minister stated that the State Government would extend legal support to those excluded from NRC so that genuine Indian citizens do not have to face any harassment.

GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda sonowal assured legal help to those excluded from National Register of Citizens (NRC) Representatives of various organisation of Bengali community of the state On Friday called on Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and apprised him about their grievances.

They also submitted a memorandum of their demands to the Chief Minister.

Assuring the delegates of taking positive steps for resolving issues afflicting the community, the Chief Minister stated that the State Government would extend legal support to those excluded from NRC so that genuine Indian citizens do not have to face any harassment.


He also asserted that it was the duty of the State Government to make all groups and sections of the people residing in the state feel secure and Government would take all necessary steps in this regard. Moreover, Sonowal assured of making sincere efforts towards socio-economic development of the Bengali community in the state.

BJP has rejected the final NRC published on August 31 last. Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa had earlier had stated not accepting refugee certificate issued prior 1971 has resulted in the exclusion of large number of Bengali Hindu, Koch Rajbonshi and Buddhist people from final NRC. Around 19 lakh people are axed out of final NRC.
