NPP fields Minister Dr. Mazel Ampareen for Shillong; Agatha K Sangma gets renomination from Tura

Ruling National People's Party has decided to field Cabinet Minister and Laitumkhrah MLA, Dr. Mazel Ampareen, from the Shillong Parliament Seat, while MP of Tura, Agatha K Sangma is renominated by the party.

Ruling National People's Party has decided to field Cabinet Minister and Laitumkhrah MLA, Dr. Mazel Ampareen, from the Shillong Parliament Seat, while MP of Tura, Agatha K Sangma is renominated by the party.

Ampareen left Congress and joined NPP prior to assembly polls this year. She is a cabinet minister. Agatha is a sitting MP from Tura.

Agatha is sister of Meghalaya's Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma. Agatha was the youngest minister of state in the Manmohan Singh Cabinet during the second term of the UPA regime.


State President of the NPP, Prestone Tynsong made the announcement of the party's candidates on Thursday.

Ampareen Lyngdoh expressed her gratitude for the party's trust in her candidacy. She stated the need for more women to take centre stage in the political arena, bringing diverse perspectives and solutions to the forefront.

Presently the Shillong seat is held by Congress’s Vincent Pala. BJP is a partner in the coalition government ruling Meghalaya.

In the 2019 polls, BJP in Assam increased its tally from seven in 2014 to nine in 2019. Across Northeast India, BJP, which won eight seats in the 2014 parliamentary elections, increased the seat tally to 14 in 2019. Together with its allies, BJP won 18 of the 25 seats, the best-ever performance for the party in the region.
