New Delhi: With Prime Minister Narendra Modi opting for virtual interactions during the Covid-19 pandemic, the government has started an online mechanism where one can register online to watch the webcast of the video conference and receive a link for the same.

This mechanism is meant mostly for people who would benefit from the announcements and would like to participate in the interaction. The National e-Governance Division (NeGD) and a “PM Interactions Team” in the PMO are handling the initiative which is called ‘PM Events’.

Over 80 lakh people have registered to watch the Prime Minister’s Griha Pravesh programme for PM Awas Yojana in Madhya Pradesh on Saturday while nearly 21 lakh people had registered to listen to the PM’s address for Bihar on Thursday making announcements in the fisheries and animal husbandry sectors. About 23 lakh people registered for watching the PM’s interaction with street vendors in Madhya Pradesh two days ago and 2 lakh people registered for his address on Friday on ‘school education in the 21st century’.

The state governments concerned are also urging people to register for the PM events, like in the case of Bihar and Madhya Pradesh.

Those who wish to listen in can enter their mobile number, name, e-mail ID, and details of his district, state, and pin code to register for the event. The person is then sent a video conference link for the event through SMS and email which becomes active 30 minutes before the event.

"Though a person can well watch the PM's programme on TV or various news mobile streams, prior registration and receiving a webcast link from the government tends to create more personalisation and involvement on part of the viewer," a senior Bihar government functionary told ET.
