Now, protege fires a salvo against Rane
Narayan Rane has come under sharp criticism from his protege Subodh Mohite, a former Shiv Sena MP and Union minister for heavy industries, for violating party discipline.
This is significant as it comes from a person who quit the Sena and the Lok Sabha to be with his mentor. Mr Mohite quit the saffron camp in 2007 and joined the Congress at Mr Ranes behest. The Congress promptly obliged and fielded him from the same Ramtek parliamentary constituency that he vacated after Mr Rane assured the party leadership of his victory.
However, the bypoll held in April 2007 saw a reversal of fortune when a rookie Sena member Prakash Jadhav defeated Mr Mohite. The electoral defeat humiliated Mr Rane more than Mr Mohite. Furious at the outcome, Mr Rane then had blamed forces from within for the partys defeat. A year later, Mr Mohite has appeared on the political scene only to denounce his mentor Mr Rane.
In a categorical statement, Mr Mohite said Mr Ranes behaviour was irresponsible. Whatever he (Mr Rane) said in Delhi before the media was an irresponsible statement, Mr Mohite said. Mr Mohite felt that instead of doing these things Mr Rane who holds an important portfolio like revenue should concentrate on increasing revenue receipts and exploring new avenues to generate more revenue for the state. The former minister said it was for the Congress party leadership to decide the disciplinary action, if any can be initiated against Mr Rane for his deeds.
Mr Mohite commented cautiously on last Thursdays pandemonium at Sonias rally. Not naming Mr Rane, Mr Mohite said all Congressmen knew who was behind the protests and sloganeering and violent clashes that followed.
