The SC on Monday agreed to examine the legality of the colonial-era Inner Line Permit (ILP) system in Manipur and issued notices to the central and state governments. A petition filed in the court has alleged that the ILP was put in place by the imperial rulers to protect their interests. These are against the Constitution of India which guarantees free movement to all citizens. A bench led by Justice S Abdul Nazeer issued notices on the petition filed by advocate Fuzail Ahmad Ayyubi. ILP operates in some districts of Nagaland and the whole of Manipur, Arunachal and Mizoram too.
