Noted writer Hiranya Kumar Bhattacharya passes away

Bhattacharya, 86 years was suffering from illness and died in a hospital in Guwahati. Posted as the DIG of the Assam’s Border Police, Bhattacharya in his report had found large presence of illegal immigrant’s name in the voter list.

Hiranya Kumar Bhattacharya, retired IPS officers who’s report pertaining to presence of “illegal immigrants” in voter list created flutters passed away on Tuesday in Guwahati.

Bhattacharya, 86 years was suffering from illness and died in a hospital in Guwahati. Posted as the DIG of the Assam’s Border Police, Bhattacharya in his report had found a large presence of illegal immigrant’s name in the voter list.

During Assam Agitation (1979-1985) he was taken into preventive detention under the National Security Act (NSA).


For his support and training to Mukti Bahini (freedom fighters) in Assam, in 2013, the Government of Bangladesh awarded the Friends of Liberation War honour to him.

He has authored several books which include ‘Betrayal of North East: The Arrested Voice’ and ‘Operation Lebensraum – Illegal Migration from Bangladesh’
