GUWAHATI: Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who was on a two-day tour to the poll-bound Meghalaya, interacted with church leaders and traditional community heads on Wednesday.

Speaking at St Edmunds College in Shillong, he said there is a sense of assault because the BJP and RSS want to impose one idea and one perspective for the nation.

“Do you know how many women are in leadership position in RSS – it is zero,” the Congress president said in the matrilineal hill state. “When you see a picture of Mahatma Gandhi, you will always find women by his side. But see a picture of (RSS chief) Mohan Bhagwat – he is always alone or surrounded by men.” Gandhi further said: “The idea of diversity is being crushed. Congress wants an open-minded regional approach to Northeast India where people of diverse cultures and religions reside.”

The BJP sought an apology from Gandhi for his remark that the BJP was trying to woo the churches of Meghalaya through money before the assembly election, for which polling will be held on February 27.
