Not linked to Prez polls, defends BSP

LUCKNOW: With the Taj Heritage Corridor case finally behind her, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati said that she would in a day or two announce her choice for president nominee, which can well be somebody backed by the UPA government at the centre.

“I was all along deliberately trying not to disclose my choice for the president. As it would have given the rival parties a chance to claim that a deal was struck with regards to my being set free in the Taj Heritage Corridor case and my parties backing for the next president,” said the chief minister.

Ms Mayawati said the BJP and the Samajwadi Party were trying to link the issue of BSP’s support for the presidential election and Taj Heritage Corridor case.

“If I had wanted to trade-off my party’s support for the president’s election with the Taj Heritage Corridor case, I would have made my choice public much before. But I deliberately chose not to disclose my party’s choice, so that no body could blame me.”
