Not even a remote chance of mid-term Lok Sabha poll: Lalu

Asserting there was not even a remote chance of a mid-term election to the Lok Sabha following the Congress-Left face-off over the Indo-US nuclear deal, said Railway Minister Lalu Prasad.

PATNA: Asserting there was not even a remote chance of a mid-term election to the Lok Sabha following the Congress-Left face-off over the Indo-US nuclear deal, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad on Thursday expressed confidence that all concerns voiced by the Marxists would be addressed in an "amicable and cordial atmosphere".

"No single party wants a snap poll as it is not in the interest of the nation. Let me tell you there is not even a remote chance of a mid-term election and all concerns voiced by the left would be addressed in an amicable and cordial atmosphere," Prasad, one of the interlocutors on the UPA-left committee to find a solution to the stand-off over the deal told a news conference.

He was responding to a query whether the UPA government had got a lease of life only till October 22 when the committee would once again sit to remove the irritants between the Congress and the Left over the deal.

On the contention of the left parties that operationalisation of the 123 agreement with the US would amount to surrendering India's sovereignty, he said "the deal purely relates to power generation. There is no possibility of surrendering ourselves to the US."

"I had organised a lathi rally a few years back against the US imperialism where I gave a call of 'Remove Bush, Save the world and Remove BJP, Save the nation'.

"How can I support imperialism now? We are always with the poor and developing nations. It is the rightist BJP which is pro-US," the RJD supremo said.
