The death of Jayalalithaa in December last year is seen to have left a vacuum in Tamil Nadu politics, especially the ruling AIADMK, and left the field wide open for new faces.
Tamil superstar Rajinikanth announced that he is going to enter politics while addressing a large gathering at Sri Raghavendra Kalyana Mandapam in Chennai.

This announcement ends the long-awaited suspense. He categorically said that he was not entering politics for money or power, but to serve people and revive democratic values.

"If I was hungry for power, I would have entered politics in 1996", said Rajinikanth.

He went on to say that in the upcoming state election, his party will contest from all the constituencies.

We are going to change the system, be transparent, spiritual-politics, said Rajinikanth. He appealed for cooperation and support from his fans.

In the name of democracy politicians are robbing us of our own money on our own land. We need to bring a change from the base, said Rajinikanth.

In 1996 Rajinikanth had asked the people to support the DMK government and not its charismatic opponent J Jayalalithaa, famously declaring, "Even God can't save Tamil Nadu if Jayalalithaa comes back to power again". The DMK swept the state polls in 1996 but later the superstar later described as "a mistake and an accident".
