JABALPUR: A special court here has sentenced Northern Coalfields Ltd's former General Manager and his son to five years rigorous imprisonment in a disproportionate assets case.

CBI Special Court Judge M K Sharma yesterday awarded five-year RI to Ram Lakhan Rai, former General Manager of Northern Coalfields Ltd (NCL) and also ex-Chief General Manager of South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL), and his son Ashok Rai.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs two lakh each on them.

During the CBI searches, Rai was allegedly found in possession of assets worth Rs 1,27,63,034 which were disproportionate to his known sources of income.

The CBI found during the investigation that Ashok abetted his father in amassing the wealth, the prosecution told the court.

The officer amassed the wealth between January 1, 1996 and September 29, 2004 during his tenure in the NCL and SECL respectively, the prosecution further said.
