GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students Union held a statewide protest against the Citizenship Amendment bill on Monday. Aasu supporters protested for around two hours in several districts. Aasu chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharyya alleged that the Centre was trying to impose the law on the people of Assam and northeast.

“We will not accept the bill. The Centre must not consider the northeast as a dumping ground for illegal immigrants. The bill is unconstitutional, illegal and anti-indigenous. We will not accept it under any circumstance.”

Umbrella organisations of student bodies of the region, North East Students’ Organisation is also set to stage demonstrations near the Raj Bhavans of northeast states in protest against the bill a fortnight later.

BJP had said that bill will be redrafted after consultation with stakeholders in the forthcoming winter session of Parliament. Home minister Amit Shah had last month met Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga and non-government organisations in Aizawal to allay fears on the bill that aims to make members of minority communities from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan eligible for Indian citizenship.
